Earlier this year, Madison Common Council approved a revised ordinance for the Cross-Country Ski Permit Program, which allows the Board of Park Commissioners to designate fee-based locations. A cross-country ski permit is required for Elver Park, Odana Hills Golf Course, and new this year, Door Creek Park. Yahara Hills is a free-to-use site. For those not familiar with the ski program in Madison Parks, typical free-to-use ski trail sites, offer limited grooming, about once per week, and as conditions allow. Fee-based sites require a Cross-Country Ski Permit and use funding from the program to provide more frequent grooming, typically 3-4 times per week or as conditions allow.

1. Stand on the bindings of the skis with weight equally distributed. Slide a piece of paper underneath the skis (they need to be clean for this) until it "bites" at each end of the kick zone. This zone should reach from approximately your heel to about a binding length in front of your toe, and you can mark it on your skis with a crayon/marker so you know where to apply your kick wax.

There are a few things to keep in mind when assessing the quality of a pair of skis. Check the bases. Some wear here is natural, but if the base material looks thin anywhere or there are some deep gouges, pass on them.

What the core of the ski (the inside layers) is made of determines how the ski reacts, how heavy it is and how durable it is. Many quality skis are made with wood cores with air channels of some kind, or dense foam. Fibreglass and carbon layers add stiffness and structure to a ski. Whatever you do, stay away from the old foam-injected skis. You can pick these out because they have a little "button" scar on the sidewall where the foam was injected. These skis lose their camber over time and the core material can break down.

Note that snowshoeing, winter hiking, and dogs are NOT allowed on designated cross-country ski trails when snow is present even if they have not yet been groomed. Roller ski poles are not only an important propulsion, they also support your movements and give you grip and stability. The fin vario plate changing system allows you to adjust your plate size depending on the condition of the trail. The cross-country plate S/M is suitable for rather firm snow. For soft ground or fresh snow, we recommend the slightly larger M/L plate. For the road, the scooter tip is optimal. Changing the plates/tips can be done without tools. Poles with a fin vario tip can therefore be used in winter as well as in summer.

The appropriate length of cross-country ski poles can be calculated with a simple formula. For classic style: body height in cm x 0.84 = recommended cross-country pole length. For skating: body height in cm x 0.89 = recommended cross-country pole length. For an exact calculation, we have also integrated a pole length advisor on our website. Simply enter your height and select the desired sport and you will find out the optimal length.
